Learn about Lewis & Clark, Pioneers and Plains Indians in Hands-On America Volume III! Sample projects include the following:
Two Dwellings
Indian tribes that grew crops and settled along rivers made earth lodge homes out of logs, willow branches, grass and sod. The entries faced east, and people watched celebrations from the roofs. Tipis were strong, lightweight shelters of the nomadic Plains Indians. Tipis were cool in summer, warm in winter and easily transported.
A Simple Sunbonnet
Head coverings were not only decorative but necessary for the pioneers. Sunbonnets shielded the women's eyes from the sun, wind and dust. The back drape protected the neck. They were made from inexpensive calico or denim.
Buffalo Headdress & Mask
Because of the critical importance of the buffalo to the Plains Indians, huge ceremonies were held to lure and honor this essential animal. Pulsing drums and shaking rattles provided music while masks and other ceremonial items transformed dancers into fierce hunters and mighty buffalo.
